Blog birthday

By jquiggin | June 21, 2005

This blog is three years old today. I hinted at this anniversary in yesterday’s Monday Message Board, and Chris Sheil was the first to guess what I meant.

Three is an advanced age for a blog. Only a handful of those who were around back then are still going. Tim Blair, Rob Corr, Jason Soon and my blogtwin Tim Dunlop are among the hardy survivors.

It’s not hard to see why people stop blogging, but also why more and more people are blogging and reading blogs. It’s exciting, exhausting, useful and very demanding on time and attention. Although I’ve had moments when I’ve been sick of the whole business, mostly I’ve enjoyed it very much. Thanks to all my readers, fellow bloggers and especially to those who’ve commented on the blog, regularly or otherwise.

Congratulations on making it to 3 years!

I’ve always enjoy reading, though I don’t think I’ve ever been brave enough to comment.

As I’ve said before here, the sets of caring and rigour don’t always overlap in this life - they do on this blog, which make it something of a sane-making oasis in a seemingly ever more hyped-up and hell-bent world.

Happy birthday and many happy returns!

    The Age of Tim

Just a quick post to advise readers that Tim Dunlop is doing a week of guest posts at The Age’s Media Blog. Onya, Tim. And in other blog news, happy 3rd birthday to John Quiggin (the blog, that is)….

    Good on you John

great news re Tim too; saw Ken ‘Politenessman’ Parish on Lateline last night as well, in his role as campaign blogger for Claire Martin, no doubt having contributed mightily to that famous rout.

A tipping point perhaps toward greater blog-cred in the MSM, or even the thin edge of an invasive blogwedge. Hope so.

Happy Birthday! And it’s one shared with Prince William, Ray Davies, Jean-Paul Sartre and Jane Russell. Imagine those four turning up to blow out yer candles.

Congrats to you and Peter Quasim, who will be released after 7 years, hopefully, for the crime of seekng ‘asylumn seeker’ status, in our democratic?, wide brown land.

    Sorry, couldn’t resist.
    Well done and good work.

One day someone will explain how JQ does everything he does, and the productivity question will be solved. Someone joked to me today that, after three years, he must be a “senior blogosphere executive.” The appellation completely misses one of the most constantly amazing things about John’s blogging, which is how he so patiently puts up with so much crap. Most of it is on the side, of course. But still, if I can’t have his output, I can at least aspire to his temperament. Tremendous effort.

Yes, amazing how a Captain Haddock lookalike is so bloody calm and patient with all the blog flotsam and jetsam that washes up here.

    Happy Blogday, Prof John!
“It’s exciting, exhausting, useful and very demanding on time and attention.” hell yes. even LJ drains hours of homework time, and is so much more addictive than biology in the first place.
congratulations on producing the most intellectual piece of procrastinatory material :)

    You are an inspiration.

For a while I consoled myself with the notion that you had an army of research assistants chained to computers, endlessly searching for the reports and figures to buttress your arguments. When I realised you do it all yourself, I was reduced to awed silence.

Never doubt your value to the rest of us.
