Blog birthday

This blog is three years old today. I hinted at this anniversary in yesterday’s Monday Message Board, and Chris Sheil was the first to guess what I meant.
Three is an advanced age for a blog. Only a handful of those who were around back then are still going. Tim Blair, Rob Corr, Jason Soon and my blogtwin Tim Dunlop are among the hardy survivors.
It’s not hard to see why people stop blogging, but also why more and more people are blogging and reading blogs. It’s exciting, exhausting, useful and very demanding on time and attention. Although I’ve had moments when I’ve been sick of the whole business, mostly I’ve enjoyed it very much. Thanks to all my readers, fellow bloggers and especially to those who’ve commented on the blog, regularly or otherwise.

As I’ve said before here, the sets of caring and rigour don’t always overlap in this life - they do on this blog, which make it something of a sane-making oasis in a seemingly ever more hyped-up and hell-bent world.

great news re Tim too; saw Ken ‘Politenessman’ Parish on Lateline last night as well, in his role as campaign blogger for Claire Martin, no doubt having contributed mightily to that famous rout.
A tipping point perhaps toward greater blog-cred in the MSM, or even the thin edge of an invasive blogwedge. Hope so.

One day someone will explain how JQ does everything he does, and the productivity question will be solved. Someone joked to me today that, after three years, he must be a “senior blogosphere executive.” The appellation completely misses one of the most constantly amazing things about John’s blogging, which is how he so patiently puts up with so much crap. Most of it is on the side, of course. But still, if I can’t have his output, I can at least aspire to his temperament. Tremendous effort.

For a while I consoled myself with the notion that you had an army of research assistants chained to computers, endlessly searching for the reports and figures to buttress your arguments. When I realised you do it all yourself, I was reduced to awed silence.
