Peter Cullen has died

Peter Cullen, a leading figure in Australia’s water policy debate for many years, has died at the age of 65. I knew Peter mainly through his work, which made a huge contribution to improving public understanding of the problems we face in managing scarce water resources, and of the possibly policy responses, and through the establishment of the Wentworth Group, which was a big step forward My occasional social interactions with him were always enjoyable. He will be much missed.

Peter Cullen inspired me when I was in college about looking after Australia’s water for the future. I remember a radio interview he did in 1999 about using phosphorous free laundry powder. It opened my eyes and changed my perspective. I wish his family lots of love and support and hope that he is remembered by all as a very talented Australian.

Indeed, to be sorely missed by all interested in or dealing with Australian water problems. We are deprived of a fine scientific mind who had an enormous grasp of issues of water; past, present and future.

One of the most important and respected voices in the often fractious debate over water in this country. His constructive and civil input will be sorely missed, but he leaves behind a solid technical and public policy legacy for us to build on.

One of the few great minds in this Country. It is sad to realise that most Australians do not seem to value when such an intellect is lost. Hopefully we will be able to follow his directions and rescue the water dabacle.
