September 2nd, 2017

After another long break, it’s time for another weekend reflections, which makes space for longer than usual comments on any topic. Side discussions to sandpits, please. Absolutely no personal criticism of other commenters.

The Brisbane Courier-Mail has published a disgraceful article, framed around the premise that Schapelle Corby has applied for Newstart Allowance.

    http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/schapelle-corby-applies-for-the-dole-as-she-lives-the-lush-life-of-an-instagram-celeb/news-story/a1bffbfe4fa01cebcf8b7559964d9835

I hold no brief for Schapelle Corby. In fact it was on this very blog that I criticised the media and other campaigns being run on her behalf after she was arrested by Indonesian authorities. But the issue here is not Schapelle Corby. The issues here are:

    (a) the dogwhistling language of the article, which is clearly intended to further the Federal Government’s agenda of demonizing welfare recipients; and

    (b) the possibility that the “highly placed sources” cited in the article are officers of the Department of Human Services who have disclosed personal information about a citizen’s application for a Centrelink payment to an unscrupulous private media outlet.

It may well be that the article is a “drop” by the Federal Government. Imre Saluszinsky explains what a “drop” is in this article.
