I’ve still been getting reports that people have been having trouble reading the new WordPress blog. Fellow blogger “Yobbo” has kindly supplied me with his template, and I’ve followed his suggestion that I should differentiate by adding a beard. I’d very much appreciate reports on the change. At this stage, I want to focus mainly on blog-critical problems like unreadability due to overlaps between posts and sidebars, but I’ll also happily accept suggestions for colour schemes and so on. I’d like to hear from
* Readers who had problems with the old layout that have now been resolved
* Readers who have problems with the new layout that weren’t present in the old
* Readers who have continuing problems
Instant update The page looks too narrow for my liking, and I’ve already had one request to widen it. If it’s already filling your screen, and a wider format would cause problems, please advise me ASAP. If you agree that it’s too narrow, also please advise.
Widen it up, it is too skinny on my system (Safari).
It’s filling my screen!
john I don’t know what you have done – but it looks great now. Elegant. Readable. And as ever.Erudite
Ditto gassit’s comment (I’m also using Safari).
The sidebar is far too narrow and I think the overall width could widened also. In adition some of the title is off the screen. And yeah, it needs colour.
Apart from that its great.
It looks fine, and the width suits me. Most importantly, it turns out that the comment preview works on my home machine (although not on the mac I was using while on holiday). And the instantaneous preview is, of course, a great improvement.
I still don’t like ‘Say It!’, but then I don’t like anything hip or cool, so my opinion is there to be disregarded.
The blog subtitle (‘Commentary on…’) needs to be bigger and more clearly distinguished from the first post.
Looks good to me John, although your name at the top gets a haircut on my machine. I like the width, but would suggest you go wild and experiment with something more than greys on greys in the colour department.
Works well for me.
For me , it’s about right. Perhaps only a little wider and larger font size would be welcome. The side bar, seems a bit too narrow. I also use Safari on Mac, which seems like the popular choice..
As for colour, I like it simple and elegant, so it’s great.
But like someone said… go wild with colour! (you can always go back)
Comes up quite narrow with lots of wasted screen real estate on my system

I’d like to hear from:…readers who have a continuing problem.
I have a long term issue concerning body butter, a stainless steel kitchen whisk and my neighbor’s long-haired alpacas. Is help available?
Plain is better for something that is read regularly – eye candy gets in the way. I like the new look. It is, however, too narrow.
I like the narrowness of the body text area. The side bar needs another centimetre or two.
I have about 4cm of blank on either side but I quite like that.
This is on Opera 7.23 at 1024 x 768 (under XP Pro)
However, in Firefox 1.0, the body text area is still narrower, in fact narrower than the comments text area to the point where the box “hangs over” the right margin.
I’d test in IE but I’m convinced that it will find a way to install a trojan even I only look at your site.
It looks OK to me. However, why fixing the widths of the text area? Just let it flow so it is not to wide for anybody and people can adjust the width to their liking just resizing the browser window.
Long time reader thinks the new layout is ok, although it could be a bit brighter…looks a little washed out. colour ?
In my view neither webpage nor email should be compulsory. It isn’t as if someone who wanted to spray anonymous bile around couldn’t hook up suitable accounts anyway. I never give my real email, due to a premonition of what in fact recently happened to Ms Fits (MIrandagate), as well as paranoia about viruses and spam.
You wouldn’t replace the tagline with: “economics with bite”?
No, I thought you wouldn’t. How about “Keynes with Karate”. No?
Oh well…
Seriously though – colour would help.
