Hartford raises one of my pet peeves concerning daylight saving. I am torn between outdoors activity and my daily dose of news etc (ABC news and 7.30 report) on the box. A rational implementation would have TV programs stay on standard time, giving us an extra hour of daylight.
More generally, the discussion about daylight vs. need for coordination should get somewhat of an airing more generally. If coordination is not needed nearly as much these days, then staggered starting/finishing times for enterprises might make some sense. Reduce the severity of morning and afternoon peak travel by spreading over longer times, for example. Reduced peak electricity loads my also be achieved.
The Queensland reference is not even correct. It says “some Queenslanders simply get out of bed earlier in the winter to stay in sync”.
