I hear you on the conditions Alice – but I never experienced ‘research above all’ except as a phrase trotted out from time to time. I remember teaching as the focus, both at the sandstone uni I worked at (tenure track position) and at the Dawkins Uni that killed off my desire to be an academic (permanent appointment- whatever that means now). Research was something you did in your own time – but of no importance except as an indicator of ‘quality’.
My parting impression was that research was being silo-ed into institutes and that teaching was increasingly recognised within job descriptions.
How long before robots start to replace middle-management?
I dont see military personnel staying in the field against robots for a whole lot longer. To the extent that the US military can claim victory in Iraq it seems to be the product of AI systems.
