Sandpit

A new sandpit for long side discussions, conspiracy theories, idees fixes and so on.

To be clear, the sandpit is for regular commenters to pursue points that distract from regular discussion, including conspiracy-theoretic takes on the issues at hand. It’s not meant as a forum for visiting conspiracy theorists, or trolls posing as such.

  1. A bit like a certain politician who has just left a certain parliament in a certain capital city. Why do men of a certain age suddenly stop listening to reasonable debates? They seem to become advocates for the most extremes views. When challenged, they quote (often it is a misquote ) some authority that they claim to be a world leading authority. In a chaotic world they seek to impose their own order. Yet there is no rational basis for their claims. The loss of self assessment is serious when such elderly men are in positions of some power, albeit based on past performances. They live in a haze of self delusion and self imposed certainty.

  2. they don’t need a rational basis…… they need an audience.
    a catchy soundbite helps,

somehow i get the idea that

“The Society for the Rehabilitation of Diphtheria”

    is not going to work.

  3. I have looked at men of my age, or a bit older, and tried to learn from their mistakes, to be more openminded and less dogmatic. How successful I’ve been is up to readers to judge.

  4. JQ, You have been much successful than most at remaining open-minded, I would say. Of course, you have had a number of advantages, which you have admitted yourself, at times and in various ways. How much of what we are is good luck and/or bad luck? Almost all, I would now say from my life experience. Indeed, I have come to doubt that genuine free-will exists at all. I am tempted to attempt a debate about that on the sandpit sometime soon.
