Beds are burning

Still only September, the country is burning and Australia’s disgrace is on world display. Unlike Morrison and Turnbull, who had to placate the denialists on their own side, #Albanese and Plibersek are choosing #climate destruction against the wishes of their supporters and voters https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-20/australia-called-to-ramp-up-climate-ambitions-nyt-ad/102876940

  1. Great headline JQ. Pity the NSW Government is assisting in “climate annihilation.”

    ^TPG23-08 – “There is an equal probability of high or low climate change impacts in the future.”

    With a policy of bothsiderism, no review for 5 years, and all predicated in BAU as the base, NSW is captured.

    So is NSW.

  2. So why are Albanese and Plibersek choosing climate destruction against the wishes of their supporters and voters? How can we change this?

    Answers: They have been bought by fossil fuel donations. They think we will vote for them regardless. We have to vote them out and not put the LNP back in. Greens, Socialists and Teals are our only hope.

    As for this summer and next and next (at least), I am dreading them. Our house insurance has gone up 100% in 4 years including 33% in the last year. We still have a house at this point and can afford to insure it. We are lucky so far. Our area is assessed as a potential bush fire risk. Basically, that’s the whole of Australia less the sandy and stony deserts and the urban / suburban areas they think will not burn. Soon, a lot more suburbs will burn too: more than people expect.

    If my house is burnt down, my assessment is:

    (a) good luck getting its insured value out of the insurance company;
    (b) good luck finding an available builder to re-build;
    (c) good luck finding anywhere to live when (a) and (b) fail.

    In most cases, people who have their house (or rental) burned down or flooded out will be ruined for life without adequate recourse or help. That is the standard experience of disaster affected people these days.

    Better hope you face no life crises from now on. Nobody is coming to help, least of all the neoliberal government or the rich and the corporations. You can forget about help. You are on your own.

  3. Further to my above post if people think I am exaggerating.

    “Never again” is a wonderful sentiment but the reality is people are being abandoned non-stop. It will only get worse, far worse, from here under neoliberal capitalism.
