  1. Yes, it appears one needs to subscribe to Arena to see most articles in it, including J.Q.’s article. I understand people need incomes in this system (neoliberal capitalism). I also understand J.Q. writes for publications with a profit business model or a cost covering business model and J.Q. abides by the rules of entry to such publications as an author. I have no problems with these particularities at this historical juncture.

In the longer view, we are still stuck with and confronted by the “long hiatus” problem of emerging, evolving or revolting out of and beyond late stage, neoliberal capitalism. I would hope as we go on, more and more intellectual output of all types will simply be placed in the public commons, in one way or in many ways. Every IP firewall is a firewall against socialism, in the final analysis. The system makes us gate-keep to protect it and to pay and perpetuate it in its coin. The irony and tragedy should not be lost on us.

Let there be no doubt that we do have to emerge, evolve or revolt out of and beyond late stage, neoliberal capitalism. What we are getting, in disastrous climate change and disastrous global pandemic emergences (yes, plural), are the fully attributable, albeit complexly caused, outcomes of the axioms of capital and private property. We really do face a future of either socialism, barbarism or extinction. The three are mutually exclusive. The latter two are mediated by collapses, the second by collapse of civilization and the third by the end of the anthropocene era itself as the shortest of all named eras and the last to be named and theorized by homo sapiens.

I recommend reading “Editorial: The Biopolitics of COVID” by Alison Caddick which is available free online in AQ. It is an excellent overview of the big issues we face.

  2. Haven’t had access to institutional journal subscriptions for 25yrs. I took it for granted then.

‘The Truth Is Paywalled But The Lies Are Free

“Breitbart, Fox News, the Daily Wire, the Federalist, the Washington Examiner, InfoWars: free! You want “Portland Protesters Burn Bibles, American Flags In The Streets,” “The Moral Case Against Mask Mandates And Other COVID Restrictions,” or an article suggesting the National Institutes of Health has admitted 5G phones cause coronavirus—they’re yours. You want the detailed Timesreports on neo-Nazis infiltrating German institutions, the reasons contact tracing is failing in U.S. states, or the Trump administration’s undercutting of the USPS’s effectiveness—well, if you’ve clicked around the website a bit you’ll run straight into the paywall. This doesn’t mean the paywall shouldn’t be there. But it does mean that it costs time and money to access a lot of true and important information, while a lot of bullshit is completely free.”…

Twiggy might pay for some of the pandemic, and have cash left over to fund Arena until Co2 returns to 259ppm, for open access. Probabikty zero.

WA received for 2020, $11bn iron ore royalties I think and…

“Fortescue Metals Group will pay a record dividend to shareholders, sending nearly $2 billion into the bank account of Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest for the year, on the back of the miner posting its biggest-ever profit.”
