Suggestions for a small experiment

Last week, I gave a presentation at the 2024 Australian Basic Income Fellows Workshop. Most of the talks were about Basic Income trials, which have been undertaken around the world. I focused on something more modest but perhaps more achievable: getting evidence on the effects of Scrapping or Scaling Back Mutual Obligation and Income Management.

  1. In context are the spin terms Mutual Obligation and Income Management oxymorons or logical paradoxes? Something else?

  2. Reminds of the reporting about such an experiment in Finnland: “Finished as a failure, people with unconditional income did not find jobs more often than those on conditional welfare”. They were happier however and did not finde them less often either. Thus the experiment was a failure.

Making welfare receipants miserable is a feature, not a bug of the current systems. You need some non human to look down too and get angry at (or happy about his/her deserved punishment) that is not the rich guy.
