  1. With Super Tuesday tomorrow, took a look at the main US Presidential candidates policies on global warming. Let’s hope Mitt Romney doesn’t win. Visit my blog for details.

  2. It’s a bit of an emperor’s clothes query but has anyone done an estimate of the amount of heat generated from our current burn rate of fossil fuels and how significant is it in raising global surface temperatures? If it was significant, that might beg the question as to whether even nuke generated steam for electric power and its spinoffs would offer us much sanctuary.

  3. observa, I asked that question at realclimate.org once – basically it’s infinitessimally small.
Even the UHI effect is at most 50% attributable to direct radiative heat pollution, and the UHI effect only applies to a tiny percentage of the Earth’s surface.

  4. the real problem is the radiation from human bodies. bring the population under 1 billion and both resource exhaustion and global warming would be much easier to deal with.

once again, china leads the way with the ‘one child’ policy. i had hopes that gay couples would be an even more effective answer from the west, but gays no sooner won acceptance for living together, than they insisted on having kids as well.

  5. Well…in the sense that a lot of the energy to grow our food comes from fossil fuels, radition from human bodies must contribute to global warming in some way, though I doubt it’s even measureable.

  6. Has anybody calculated whether, on a total life-cycle basis, blogging contributes more or less to global warming than old-fashioned hot air?

  7. Actually somebody did supposedly calculate the degree to which the Internet contributes towards global warming, based purely on power consumption.

Of course, a far more interesting figure is the degree towards which it reduces physical travel, which is presumably far more significant.

  8. I think the fraud is quite genuine – the timing of its disclosure was suspiciously convenient though.

  9. Ian,
The convenience arises from the large position being taken and the markets he was trading on declining. He claims the position was up EUR1.5bn a couple of months ago and his bosses turned a blind eye to it. Given the performance of the markets over this period it is a reasonable claim.
This whole thing, though, does not speak well of the risk management practices at SocGen.
